Has The Last Guardian been cancelled?

In what might just shape up to be a huge Sony upset, it's being rumoured that The Last Guardian – made by Ico and Shadow of the Colossus developer Team Ico – has been cancelled.

In production for more than three long years, Team Ico's latest is expected to triumph the same kind of heart and scalability of its two previous efforts. It's the developers first project on current HD platforms.

In a striking turn of fate, earlier this month we were greeted with the news that long-time Team Ico boss Fumito Ueda had left Sony and was only to be working on The Last Guardian as a 'contractor'. Now, there's increasing speculation that the game has been cancelled after GameStop customers who had pre-orders for the title have been left automated messages by the retailer that explains the PlayStation 3-exclusive is no longer available due to being cancelled by Sony.

The game has since been removed from the company's online website. According to Kotaku, Sony's senior director of corporate communications, Patrick Seybold, has responded that the rumours are false, stating “This is not true”.

Perhaps, but the situation is hazy at best and we wouldn't be surprised if GameStop has in fact spilled the beans before Sony formally got the chance to do so. More on this later, we expect.
