You Can Now Download Netflix Movies And TV Shows For Offline Viewing

Probably the most requested Netflix feature has now become a reality. In their new update, you can now download movies and TV shows for offline viewing.

The streaming service has added an option to download “select films and TV shows” to your device, so you can watch online – something that users have asked for since the company switched on online streaming in 2007.

So, what do they mean by “select?” Well, it’s not their entire library – that’s a lot of licensing arrangements to sort out! They’ve begun with their original shows and movies.

Once you’ve updated your app (compatible with iOS 8 and Android 4.4.2 or later), you’ll get the option to save content for later and two options tow do so: standard or higher. According to Netflix’s help page: “Standard quality is a slightly lower video resolution that requires less storage space and takes less time to download. Higher quality is a higher video resolution that requires more storage space and takes more time to download.”

No specifics are given as to what “higher resolution” is, but assume it to be either 720p or 1080p. 4K is unnecessary on screens that size.

It’s obvious how helpful this feature will be, which has been available on Amazon Video and more recently Vudu. Journeys by train, plane or coach need no longer be boring or consume all of your data. Save your favourite TV shows for future consumption in places with limited-to-no internet connection.

Best part is Netflix is not making this feature available on all streaming plans. This means the company isn’t trying to up-sell you on a higher subscription price! Ending 2016 the right way.
