After five years, Apple recalls 1st gen iPod nano

So you know that plastic iPod Nano you probably have stashed away in a drawer somewhere?  Maybe it's buried on a shelf somewhere or underneath the bed (that's where I found mine).  Turns out they could pose a fire hazard, and Apple want to replace it for you, for free.

From today, Apple is proactively reaching out to any remaining 1st generation iPod nano owners purchased between September 2005 and December 2006 through an online replacement program. As has always been the case with cupertino's output, claims of the overheating issues can be traced to a single battery supplier and very few devices were ever likely to overheat at all, but "the likelihood increases as the battery age," so the thought process is probably better to be safe than sorry.  Find the iPod nano (1st generation) Replacement Program via our source link, and enter your serial number to check eligibility.

UPDATE: no official confirmation of what model it is replaced with, whether it be the same nano with a different battery or a newer model.  Sit tight, we've just been confirmed, so we'll get back to you on this.
